Guterres arrived in Lviv for a trilateral meeting with Zelensky and Erdogan

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres arrived this Wednesday in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, where on Thursday he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The information was shared by the press secretary of Guterres Stefan Dujarric on the social network Twitter, where he posted a photo of the arrival of the Secretary General to Ukraine.

Guterres’ meeting with Zelensky and Erdogan will take place next Thursday in Lvov (west), and the next day Guterres will visit Odessa (south), the port of which is being used to export Ukrainian grains under an agreement promoted by the UN itself. and Turkey.

Later, the head of the UN will travel to Istanbul to visit the Joint Coordinating Center, which monitors the observance of this pact, Stephane Dujarric explained.

“At the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Secretary General will be in Lviv on Thursday to attend a trilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Ukrainian leader,” Duharrik said during a press briefing on Tuesday, specifying that António Guterres would later travel to Odessa and Turkey.

Also, according to Dujarric, it is expected that part of the trilateral meeting will be devoted to reviewing the operation of the initiative, which allowed unblocking grain exports through the Black Sea.

In addition, the UN Secretary General plans to hold a bilateral meeting with the President of Ukraine, where he will touch upon the general state of the conflict, the need for a political solution and other issues, for example, the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. the plant and attempts to send a mission of international experts to evaluate it on the spot, the spokesman said.

Guterres was already in Ukraine last April on a trip that also saw him passing through Turkey and Russia, during which he was involved in the evacuation of the beleaguered Azovstal plant in Mariupol, where the Ukrainian military was besieged, which eventually happened. a few days later with the support of the UN.

During this trip, a grain export agreement also began to take shape, which took months to complete.

The military offensive launched by Russia on February 24 in Ukraine has already forced more than 12 million people from their homes — more than six million internally displaced people and more than six million to neighboring countries — according to the latest UN figures, which rank this migration crisis as the worst in Europe since during the Second World War (1939-1945).

Also, according to the UN, about 16 million people in Ukraine are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The Russian invasion, justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, has been condemned by the international community at large, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing sanctions that affect virtually every industry, from banking to energy to sports. .
