Russia closes Nord Stream 1 for three days and Europe trembles

Germany, the biggest victim

Germany has already had to help UniperGermany’s largest importer of Russian gas and the most prominent victim of the crisis energetic European so far, with a rescue of 15,000 million euros ($15.1 billion) last month, after Russia slashed flows, forcing it to buy gas from others at much higher prices.

The broader economic impact of Germany was evident in the data from the production prices on Friday, which in July registered the largest increases in history, both year-on-year and month-on-month, as energy costs soared.

Gazprom will continue to limit shipments

The Nord Stream pipeline has been running at only a fifth of its capacity which has raised fears that Russia may completely cut off supplies for the winter heating season and make it difficult to fill the installations of storage.

Gazprom said the three-day stoppage was because the pipeline’s only remaining gas compressor needs maintenance, but the move will spell further disruption, especially for Germany, which relies heavily on deliveries from Moscow to fuel its industry.

Once maintenance is complete, flows of 33 million cubic meters (mcm) per day will resume, in line with current volumes, he said, which is still a 20% of its capacity of 167 mcm.

In its statement on Friday, Gazprom said that maintenance work at the gas compressor station Trent 60 remaining will be carried out together with Siemens.
