There were no passengers on the tram at the time, and the driver was not injured in the incident. Passers-by were not affected. Driving was restricted for two and a half hours, lines 11 and 71 did not run between Enkplatz, Grillgasse and Fickeysstraße. Regular operations were restored at 9 a.m., Wiener Linien said.
The incident happened at 6.30 a.m. in the area of the Fickeysstraße stop – the affected tram set had just come out of Simmering station and had started operating. The driver may have overlooked a switch during a fork trip, so that the tram jumped off the rails at low speed. “The exact course of the accident is being investigated,” a spokeswoman for Wiener Linien told APA. The clean-up work was done at full speed. The tram was lifted back onto the tracks, pulled in and thoroughly checked. “Meanwhile, the train has been initiated again,” said the spokeswoman.
