For Ducati it was the seventh victory in nine races since 2016 in Spielberg. “Hausherr” KTM won the remaining two races. Last year’s winner Binder had no chance of a podium this time from 12th place. The Italian pole holder Enea Bastianini (Ducati) retired early with a defect, Jorge Martin failed with his Ducati in the finish when attacking Miller.
Almost 170,000 spectators came to the Austria race in 2022, the 13th of 20 rounds of the season. On Sunday alone there were 92,035. They witnessed a race that, after many dramatic accidents in the past, ended with a safety chicane for the first time. This new left-right-left turn two (2A/2B) didn’t cause any problems and helped stage a smooth race.
After the support races, which were dominated by Asians, the Japanese anthem could be heard twice at the Red Bull Ring. Ai Ogura (Kalex) took the championship lead by a point after beating Thai Somkiat Chantra (Kalex) in a crash-prone Moto2 race. Young KTM star Pedro Acosta (ESP) finished fourth despite recently breaking a femur. In Moto3, Ayumu Sasaki (Husqvarna) prevailed over Tatsuki Suzuki (Honda) despite a double long lap penalty. The Spaniard Sergio Garcia (GasGas) continues to lead in the World Championship.
