Coach Thomas Silberberger’s squad won the 5th round of the Bundesliga at SV reed 2:1 (0:1) after being 0:1 behind at the break. While the Upper Austrians conceded their third defeat of the season, the first at home, the Tyroleans increased their points account to seven. That means sixth place in the table.
Coach Christian Heinle’s team created more chances and a 1-0 lead through Tin Plavotic (32′). That wasn’t enough in the end, as the Watteners turned the game around through Sandi Ogrinec (48′) after a serious mistake by Julian Wießmeier and Zan Rogelj (84′). The Rieder keep with four points and are tenth. In the next round, the Upper Austrians are guests in Hartberg, while the WSG has a home game against the WAC.
Heinle made several changes in the starting eleven after the 1-0 defeat in Klagenfurt. Captain Marcel Ziegl moved back into the defensive for the suspended defender Markus Lackner, Bologna loanee Kingsley Michael made his debut in midfield and Leo Mikic stormed instead of Christoph Monschein. Seifedin Chabbi, on the other hand, was not fit after his gastrointestinal illness and sat in the stands. There were two changes for the Tyroleans compared to the 1:2 at Vienna Austria: Felix Bacher was in the starting lineup instead of Rogelj and Lautaro Rinaldi stormed alongside goalgetter Tim Prica for the injured Nik Prelec.
The 4,000 or so spectators saw little that was constructive in the early stages. The hosts had the first opportunity, Wießmeier used a Weberbauer cross with a head on goal, WSG keeper Ferdinand Oswald had no trouble (16th). At the other end, Ogrinec did not adjust his sights well when he shot from a good 20 meters (18′).
Mikic missed the finish after a fast direct game in front of Oswald, but got a corner (31st). And from this, the Rieder lead fell: First, Oswald deflected a Plavotic header to the bottom edge of the bar, and the goalie also saved Ziegl’s sweep. But then he was powerless against Plavotic’s follow-up shot (32′). It was the Croatian’s first Bundesliga goal. A little later, Josef Weberbauer missed the 2:0, who ran towards Oswald on the counterattack, but shot the ball at the keeper’s head (41′).
That should take revenge after the break. The second half was just two minutes old when it was 1-1. Ogrinec benefited from a bad mistake by Wießmeier, who tried to let the ball drain to his own goalkeeper with his chest. That failed thoroughly, the Slovenian sprinted in between and pushed in to equalize. In return, Wießmeier almost made up for his mistake, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area landed too centrally at Oswald (49′).
Shortly thereafter, the focus was on Wießmeier again, who, after a corner, was unable to score in the goal while turning because Valentino Müller saved on the line (58th). In this scene there was also a hands-on alarm because Dominik Stumberger got the leather on his arm, referee Gerhard Grobelnik and the VAR rightly did not decide on a penalty kick. In the 71st minute, Monschein came on for Michael, saw and immediately hit the outside of his foot to put Rieder back in the lead. Only an offside position by the striker thwarted the goal (72nd).
The game was finally turned upside down by substitute Rogelj, who made it 2-1 for the Tyroleans after a quick changeover and a fine assist from Tim Prica (84th). The extremely efficient WSG thus secured their second win of the season.
