Most recently, President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka provided campaign assistance via email and asked friends and acquaintances to sign a declaration of support for Van der Bellen.
Most VP provincial governors have also openly spoken out in favor of Van der Bellen. Tyrol’s new VP chief Anton Mattle, who is fighting his first state election on September 25, two weeks before the Hofburg election, also wants to promote Van der Bellen in his election campaign. The Greens and SPÖ already expressed their support for Van der Bellen in May when he announced his re-election.
FP candidate Walter Rosenkranz was nevertheless combative and confident of getting into a runoff election at the weekend. A current survey by Unique Research and Peter Hajek for “profil” and ATV currently sees it at just 13 percent, Van der Bellen comes to 66 percent. Dominik Wlazny, who has collected the necessary 6,000 declarations of support since last week, comes to five percent, lawyer Tassilo Wallentin and ex-politician Gerald Grosz to six percent each. It is not yet clear whether they will clear the signature hurdle.
