However, that was eight years ago. Most recently, the new Vienna Central Station was the winner of the survey conducted by the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ). In the category of provincial capitals (in which Vienna is represented three times), Linz is only in eighth place this year. Only Vienna Meidling and the main train station Bregenz are behind Linz. Outside the provincial capitals, Rankweil (Vorarlberg) is at the top for the larger stations, and Seefeld in Tirol for the smaller stations. Another train station from Upper Austria made it into the ranking list, namely Braunau.
Pleasant environment desired
More than 11,000 passengers rated the stations according to 15 criteria. Overall, Austria’s train stations received a “good” from passengers in the VCÖ train station test. Passengers see a great need for improvement in waiting areas, sanitary facilities and the area around the station. Three out of four passengers come to the station without a car. “Contemporary train stations are a mobility hub. They should be a place where people feel comfortable. And passengers want a pleasant station environment,” said VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger, summarizing the results of the VCÖ train station test.
The accessibility of the train stations by public transport was rated at 1.6, accessibility at 1.8, the general state of preservation and weather protection at 1.9. Cleanliness was rated 2.1.
