Taboo breaking and a few promises were the cards that the Angolan president and re-candidate for the post again presented this Saturday to his supporters in Luanda, where he held a campaign-ending rally.
Four days before the elections, in which the Angolans will choose a new President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who is running for a new term, welcomed election observers and representatives of the international press, saying that “you can come and confirm the victory of the MPLA and its candidate.”
The candidate took the opportunity to speak about the taboos he had broken and push for reforms that he said were “concrete steps” rather than political propaganda.
Among them, he hailed the “greater freedom of expression, of the press and of demonstrations,” which he says he achieved as a result of the great discovery he made in 2017, when he became president of the republic, succeeding José Eduardo dos Santos.
The mandate, which also violated other “taboos” such as the fight against corruption, he stressed, stating that “before, no one could get this old party orientation off the paper” and that the MPLA leadership took very bold measures that turned out to be right, despite having encountered several “resistances”.
