Dog ownership: New rules from September 1st

Previously, every dog over twelve weeks old had to be registered in writing within three days with the main municipality of residence. The necessary proof of expertise, a confirmation of registration from the pet database and proof that the dog has liability insurance with a minimum coverage of 725,000 euros must also be submitted.

What is new for dog owners is that from September 1, 2022, changes or a change in dog liability insurance must also be announced to the municipality. Municipalities also have the right to actively check the existence of sufficient dog liability insurance. The municipalities can carry out this check either with the dog owner or with the insurance company.

“This amendment to the law serves to improve victim protection. This ensures that there are no insurance gaps and that every registered dog in Upper Austria is sufficiently insured in the event of damage,” says Provincial Councilor Birgit Gerstorfer.
