Like his batteries, the majority owner of Varta AG, Michael Tojner, still has electricity and voltage ready for events in his hometown. For the ninth time, the entrepreneur dedicated part of his time to a youth tournament, which he has been organizing with Union Haag officials on the pitch of the local football club since 2014. “I’m an active athlete myself and an avid football fan, so it’s a matter close to my heart to support young talent as best I can,” says Tojner. The best way to do that is with match practice and competition, says the ex-national player and national coach of Israel, Andi Herzog, who has taken over the patronage of the tournament as patron.
In addition to the Bundesliga clubs Red Bull Salzburg (participating for the first time), SK Rapid Wien, FK Austria Wien, Sturm Graz, FC Blau-Weiss Linz, LAZ Amstetten (SKU Amstetten), Vienna, GAK, Flyeralarm Admira and LASK, the host’s junior teams also took part Union Haag and the Wiener Sportclub, the Union TTI St. Florian, the Union Wolfsbach and the UFC St. Peter in der Au from the 2nd Lower Austrian state league. Tournament and youth director Georg Hiebl from Union Haag was completely satisfied with the course of the competition: “You could see the ambition, the commitment, but also a little nervousness of the young people. We can be a little proud of the best-attended tournament in Austria for speak this age group.”
This year the boys of the GAK were able to lift the cup, who defeated the city rivals of Sturm Graz in the final. As a bonus, there are free tickets for the international match against Croatia on September 25 in Vienna.
