Controversy in France for a campaign with a pregnant transgender man

The controversy centers on a poster of The Family Planningwhich features a drawing of a transgender man -who was attributed the female sex at birth, but who identifies with the male gender-, during her pregnancy.

Its dissemination especially unleashed criticism from the extreme right. “But how stupid… and probably dangerous in the end, this obsession with deconstructing everything,” tweeted the spokesperson for the National Group, Sebastien Chenu.

The delegate minister of Equality between men and women, isabel romeexpressed his support for Le Planning Familial, “a historic association that is essential for women’s rights, access to contraception and abortion.”

“Let’s not let the extreme right fuel hatred using a communication campaign, which I can understand does not achieve a consensus,” the minister added on Monday, in a statement sent to AFP.

Criticism from feminism

The campaign also generated outrage in sectors of the feminism from France. In an open letter to Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne published Monday by Marianne magazine, activists Margaret Stern Y Dora Moutot warn of the “transactivist ideology”.

“Stating that women are not necessarily female and vice versa is a matter of belief, not biology,” according to Stern and Moutot, for whom these beliefs “have no place in the institutions entrusted with missions of public service“.

On Friday, before the first criticism, Le Planning Familial denounced in a statement a “very violent attack” on social networks by the extreme right and defended its “unconditional” reception, regardless of its gender identity.

France, which in 2010 became the first country in the world to take the transsexuality from the list of psychiatric illnesses, authorizes since 2017 the modification of marital status without having to “justify medical treatment, surgical operation or sterilization”, but through a process in court.
