“These are the figures that the UN has been able to verify. We believe that the real number is much higher,” Unicef executive director Catherine Russell was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency Sputnik.
Most of these casualties, Russell said, are due to the use of explosive weapons that “do not discriminate between civilians and combatants, especially when used in populated areas, as has been the case in Ukraine.”
Beyond the physical damage, according to Unicef, “Nearly all children in Ukraine have been exposed to deeply distressing events, and those fleeing violence are exposed to significant risk of family separation, violence, abuse, sexual exploitation and human trafficking.”
The escalation of hostilities in Ukraine it also devastated the education system. “We estimate that one in 10 schools has been damaged or destroyed”Russell said.
The executive director called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and called for all children to be protected from harm.
“This includes ending the brutal use of explosive weapons in populated areas and attacks on civilian facilities and infrastructure. Ukraine’s children urgently need security, stability, access to safe learning, child protection services and psychosocial support. But more than anything , the children of Ukraine need peace,” he stressed.
