Lots of music and little sleep. On the last day of the 11th New York City Music Marathon, in which the OÖN are media partners, lecturers and students are a bit exhausted, but wide awake when they go on stage, where combos and singers perform what they are into learned and practiced in the workshops. Right from the start, the children inspire with their remarkable ability, lovingly conducted and accompanied by trumpeter Simon Plötzeneder. Three and a half hours later, professionals like the pianist Ernst Kreuzmair from Simbach and the singer Ulli Burgstaller from Altheim are on stage with their combo, and they too have benefited from the teachers again.
Kreuzmair notes that he learned more differentiated things about Latin American music this time. He really liked the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra, he also plays in two big bands himself. He couldn’t listen to all the concerts because he himself had been booked twice for concerts elsewhere. “It’s great when you have an opportunity like this on site,” he says, praising the range of workshops put together by Gernot Bernroider. “It sounds nice when there are six of us playing in a group, and that’s so rare with bass players,” says Daliah Frühling and is enthusiastic about the New York lecturer Ike Sturm, who spreads a good mood. Daliah is not only a participant, but also helps with the organization, whether filming, selling tickets, lugging boxes, cleaning up. She has been there for six years. The concert by Chanda Rule and The Sweet Emma Band was outstanding for Astrid Aichinger. She performed as a singing student of Danielle Lous from the Netherlands at the final concert – with a stronger voice than a year ago.
“Like a New Family”
Christian Wegscheider feels the sense of community over the five days like a new family. He led the Songwriting and Arrangement workshop, which was offered for the first time. “The songs have become what the people are like,” he says happily. He also has praise for the audience: “We felt extremely comfortable,” he says of his Jazzbaby performance with Stefanie Boltz from Munich.
“Kai Strauss & The Electric Blues Allstars and the Big Bands, Chanda and Paul Zauner” – it’s great to bring these artists here, praises the loyal concert visitor Gerhard Herlbauer from Braunau, who also has experience as an organizer – with the Team 68 Braunau. He has been buying the festival pass for four years.
He would like to see even more visitors from the region and plans to take part in the drums workshop next year. Daliah Frühling hopes that people will continue to like it and that there will be enough sponsors again for 2023. Ernst Kreuzmair wants young people to follow and a local jazz scene to develop.
