The attack took place on Ukrainian Independence Day. Russia had previously threatened such attacks on civilian infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on Wednesday that about 50 people were injured at the Chaplyne railway station in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the first – not yet verified – pictures from the region, a passenger train was hit.
“Rescue forces are on duty. Unfortunately, the number of deaths may increase,” Zelenskyj reported in a video link with the UN Security Council in New York. “This is how we live every day. This is how Russia prepared for this session of the UN Security Council.”
11-year-old child killed in another attack
Elsewhere in the Dnipropetrovsk region in the center of the country, an 11-year-old child was killed by Russian shelling on Wednesday, local authorities said. In April, a Russian rocket hit the station forecourt in the city of Kramatorsk in the Donbass, killing 57 people.
