For hundreds of years you have had to pay money to use certain paths. In Europe there are two different systems for collecting the fees. These either depend on the route driven or a one-off vignette fee is paid. Countries in southern Europe in particular charge these costs, while in Scandinavia you rarely have to pay anything.
toll system
Distance-related tolls are usually between 0.06 and 0.15 euros per kilometer. These are then paid when driving in or out at the toll station. The classic toll system mainly occurs in the following countries:
- France: The fee varies from 0.07 to 0.16 euros per kilometer. If you want to drive through the Franco-Italian Mont Blanc tunnel, it costs 48 euros.
- Greece: The price for a journey on most sections of the motorway is between 2.20 euros and 17.40 euros.
- Italy: A kilometer by car in Italy costs on average 0.07 euros. However, additional fees apply for certain passes or tunnels.
- Croatia: The tolls here range from 0.95 to 17.30 euros. The latter concerns, for example, the journey from Zagreb to Lipovac.
- Spain: 100 Spanish kilometers cost an average of ten euros. Tolls in Spain are among the highest in Europe.
vignette system
The following countries prefer the vignette system we are familiar with:
- Austria: Guests can get the sticker for ten days for 9.60 euros. It costs 28.20 euros for two months and 93.80 euros for one year. However, there are individual routes where you have to pay extra fees. That would be, for example, the Tauernschleuse (19.40 euros) or the Bosruck Tunnel (six euros).
- Romania: A vignette for one week costs three euros, three months 13 euros and one year 28 euros.
- Switzerland: Here there is only an annual vignette for 39 euros. One-time fees for tunnels may also apply.
- Slovenia: A week in Slovenia is EUR 15, a month EUR 30 and a year EUR 110. You have to pay an additional 7.60 euros for each passage through the Karawanken Tunnel.
- Hungary: Ten days are 10.25 euros, one month 14 euros, one year 125.70 euros. The annual vignette is the most expensive in Hungary.
Where to find the most expensive toll roads
The leader in Europe is Switzerland with its many Alpine passes and tunnels. The average usage costs there are 21.90 euros, informed the rental car provider Sunny Cars. Austria took second place with an average of 13.46 euros. The most expensive road in Europe is also in Austria: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which is particularly popular due to its impressive mountain panorama, charges 38 euros per day.
