The seven-year-old dog named Mia was one of around 4,000 beagle dogs rescued from a breeding facility by authorities in Virginia in July, the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday (local time).

Animal activist Shannon Keith from the organization “Beagle Freedom Project” in California told the newspaper that Duchess Meghan had contacted her personally. The couple visited the animal welfare organization earlier this month and specifically chose the older lady dog over one of their eight puppies, Keith said. The Beagle Freedom Project linked the report of the adoption on Twitter on Wednesday.

Duchess Meghan is known as a dog lover. She has previously adopted dogs and has long been involved with animal charities. The couple lives with their two children Archie (3) and Lilibet (1) in Montecito, California near Santa Barbara.
