Michelle Bachelet leaves the UN with a fiery request for an end to the war in Ukraine

Bachelet referred to the Ukraine conflict in her press conference at the end of her term. “I call on the Russian president to end the armed attack on Ukraine,” he declared. “The Zaporizhia plant must be demilitarized immediately“, he added.

Michelle Bachelet, former Chilean president, explained that her services have accounted for at least 5,587 civilians killed and 7,890 wounded since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine six months ago. Among all those victims about 1,000 were children.

“It was six months ago yesterday that Russia invaded Ukraine. Six unbelievably terrifying months for the Ukrainian people, in which 6.8 million people had to flee their country. Millions more have been displaced within the country,” he stated.

“Six months later the fighting continues, with inconceivable risks for civilians and the environmentbecause of the hostilities near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant”, of which Russia and Ukraine have accused each other, Bachelet lamented.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who will step down at the end of the month, asked both parties to respect “at all times and in all circumstances the international right“.

And he emphasized that “the international community must insist on the principle of responsibility” with regard to the many serious crimes documented, some of which could fall into the category of war crimes.
