Journalist Fredid Roman murdered

The reporter and columnist was attacked on Monday as he was leaving his home and about to get into his car. The episode occurred very close to a military barracks, but despite this, the perpetrators of the crime were not arrested or even prosecuted.

Fredid Román had a long career as a reporter in several newspapers in Guerrero and later became the owner and director of the newspaper. Reality, which stopped publishing several years ago. He also worked in press offices at the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI, center) in the state and with the governor Angel Aguirre.

Román’s crime revived the demands of press workers for safe conditions to carry out their work in one of the most violent countries in the world.

To the cry of “no to silence!” and with signs reading “enough of impunity” and “justice”, the demonstrators, mostly journalists, protested on the coastal avenue of Acapulco to repudiate the murder.

“We demand a professional research and that they proceed with the full rigor of the law. We demand respect for the right to inform and to be informed,” Ignacio Hernández, a veteran journalist from Guerrero, said during the rally.

The crime was also condemned this Tuesday by the leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. “It’s a sad case,” he said at his daily news conference.

The state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that it is investigating if the case of Fredid Román is related to the murders of the son of the journalist and another man, which occurred on July 1.

According to local media, the deceased son of the journalist was dedicated to selling chicken and had denounced alleged criminals who would control the distribution of food in some towns in Guerrero. Roman had continued with these claims.

According to the NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Since 2000, more than 150 journalists have been murdered in Mexico. These crimes, for the most part, remain unpunished.
