Experts point out that the intensity, extent and duration of this heat wave can make it one of the worst in the world.
In Chongqing, with 30 million inhabitants, the jialing rivera tributary of the Yangtze, is dry and patience is running out.
Desperate to escape the heat, hundreds of middle-aged or elderly residents flock to the depths of the subway stations, where spend hours smoking, playing cards or sleeping.
Stretched out on chairs or on blankets, there are street sweepers at the station during their break time, manual workers, the unemployed or people who live nearby. Despite a recent outbreak of Covid-19 in the city, where 10 million people had to take mandatory tests, you don’t see many masks.

At a nearby supermarket, a manager told AFP that many of those who hang out at the subway station have air conditioning at home but get bored and look for time with their friends.
But passers-by are unimpressed by their presence and wade through the crowd, a reminder that business in the Chinese city continues despite the sweltering heat in the streets above.
