The real figure, however, is probably much higher, since although more than 3.5 million deaths from Covid-19 were recorded worldwide in 2021, many countries, including Spainthey no longer track and report cases and deaths with the same accuracy.
“We have passed the tragic milestone of one million deaths from Covid-19 since the beginning of the year,” said the WHO director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusat a press conference.
High vaccination rates are lacking
The head of the UN health agency called on the governments of all countries to redouble their efforts to vaccinate all health workers, the elderly and other especially exposed or vulnerable groups, in order to achieve a 70% vaccination coverage for the entire population.
In January 2022, the WHO, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partners created the Alliance for the Delivery of the Covid-19 Vaccine, with the aim of facilitating the distribution of doses in 34 countries where vaccination coverage is less than 10%, of which all except 60 place in Africa.
Tedros congratulated himself because there were only 10 States left with coverage below 10%, although “there is still a lot to do.”
The head of the WHO warned that a third of the world’s population is not yet vaccinatedincluding two-thirds of health workers and three-quarters of older people in low-income countries.
According to the agency’s latest statistics, the Covid-19 pandemic is responsible for 6.45 million deaths worldwide since the first cases appeared at the end of 2019 in China.
