According to information provided by the electronic media Ex Ante, an adviser to Minister Vega, speaking on her behalf, tried on May 11 to contact Llaitul by telephone, after he announced his intention to maintain the armed struggle for the recovery of lands that the Mapuche consider theirs by ancestral rights in the south of Chile.

Boric also referred to the arrest on Wednesday of Llaitul, leader of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), one of the main radical Mapuche organizations that has claimed responsibility for forest fire attacks.

“In Chile, nobody is above the law,” said the presidentemphasizing that Llaitul has not been willing to take the proposed path of dialogue.

The charges for his arrest are theft of wood, usurpation and attack against the authority.

In an extensive day of formalization this Thursday, in the Guarantee Court of the city of Temuco, in the region of La Araucania, Llaitul was placed in preventive detention.

The CAM issued a statement on Wednesday in which it describes the arrest of its leader as “the materialization of political persecution” against his “political project.”

Llaitul has recognized the recovery of wood and has called for armed resistance in the framework of the actions carried out to expel forestry companies from the territory they consider theirs in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions.

He also admitted in various press interviews that members of the CAM were responsible for arson attacks within the framework of their demands.
