The goal is an increase to the level of the minimum income of 978 euros, says the green defense spokesman David Stögmüller in “Standard” and “Presse” on Friday. The ÖVP confirms the negotiations, but the People’s Party ties its approval of the package to the green okay for the multi-year budget path for the federal army.
The ÖVP, led by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, wants a significant increase in financial resources for the army. The budget is to increase to 1.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2027, and the path to this goal is currently being negotiated for the coming years. The army budget is currently 0.6 percent of GDP.
Conscripts currently receive a monthly allowance of 238 euros, plus a basic salary of 124 euros. If they are on duty (for example at the border), there is an additional bonus. Civil servants receive a basic salary of 362 euros – and in addition often a meal allowance of up to 16 euros per day. The federal government pays part of the fee – how much depends on the facility.
