The Ukrainian Football League game between Rukh Lviv and Melatist Kharkiv lasted four hours and 27 minutes on Wednesday instead of the usual 90 due to several air raid warnings.
The match, played in Lviv, was interrupted three times by signal sirens warning of a possible Russian attack, and ended only at 19:27 local time (17:27 in Lisbon) – after starting at 15:00 – after following security protocols. , in total, the teams spent two hours and 25 minutes in the bunker.
Despite being located in the west of the country, close to the Polish border, Lviv has been the subject of vicious air attacks in recent months.
Lviv is also one of the places that received the largest number of internal refugees after the Russian invasion on February 24th.
The Ukrainian league resumed on Tuesday, a day before Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day, which celebrates its secession from the Soviet Union in 1991, exactly six months after Russian military aggression began.
According to the results of the football marathon, Metalist won with a score of 2:1 without an attack.
A match between Minaj and Lvov was also scheduled for this Wednesday, but it was rescheduled.
Official football competitions in Ukraine, suspended six months ago due to the war, resumed on Tuesday in the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky and the military, who started the country’s main championship.
In December 2021, the championships went through their usual winter break but never returned as war broke out on February 24 in the face of a Russian-led invasion.
Since then, many football players and coaches have joined the country’s army, and several clubs have become involved in humanitarian work and are trying to raise funds to support the war effort.
Some clubs have temporarily moved their team headquarters: Dynamo Kyiv operates in Lodz, Poland, a country that also hosted Shakhtar but in Warsaw.
Due to the exceptional military situation, which also led to the bombing of stadiums and playing and training fields, FIFA allowed the players and coaches to terminate the contracts, so the championship should be, first of all, Ukrainian athletes.
In June, a decision was made to return the competition – also for youth teams and women’s competitions, and although there was a possibility that the games would be held in Poland and Turkey, all matches would be played on Ukrainian soil.
The games will be held mainly in the capital Kyiv and in the west of the country to avoid regions of war. However, matches will be played behind closed doors and with strict security measures.
