It was around 12 noon on Thursday when several large boulders broke loose above the entrance to Felsenstein Untermühl in the municipality of Sankt Martin (Rohrbach district). They tore down trees and landed right on the trail. Nobody got hurt.
The Rohrbach district authority ordered the hiking trail to be officially closed due to the acute danger. The demolition site is to be examined by a geologist on Monday. Further decisions are then made on the basis of the findings.
The road will remain closed until further notice, the police said in the evening. A provisional barrier was set up at both entry points. The municipality will erect a barrier using a scissor lattice and the information board “Danger of falling rocks”.
The Felsensteig runs from the center of Untermühl along the banks of the Danube for a length of about 1.5 kilometers. The narrow trail is partially secured with ropes, drops steeply towards the Danube and leads to the chain tower.
