Helicopter mission on the Traunstein: 65-year-old fell on the east ridge

The alpine accident happened last Wednesday. As the police reported on Saturday, the helicopter was used in addition to the alpine police and mountain rescuers. An injured climber was flown into the valley.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. in the “Green Lane” below the summit. The 65-year-old from the Ried district wanted to climb the Traunstein together with his 38-year-old son. To do this, they chose the unmarked and exposed route over the east ridge. The climbers, who, according to the police report, were well equipped and well prepared, only had about 70 meters of altitude to go when the 65-year-old suddenly fell and fell on a rock. He couldn’t go any further, so his son called 911. A helicopter rescue using a rope was not possible because the weather had deteriorated immediately after the fall. Gmundner mountain rescuers and alpine police officers were flown to the Traunstein, got out at a fog-free spot and made their way to the casualty. They took him to the summit where the helicopter was waiting. Despite the fog, it was possible to bring the injured down into the valley. He was then taken to the hospital.
