The 2015 world champion, also known as “Guitarantula”, who comes from Russia but starts for France, prevailed against seven opponents in the final on Friday evening in the city of Oulo. The competition is about playing an imaginary guitar to a piece of music. The world championship is part of the August Festival in the Oulo region with music, art, literature and performance and has been held since 1996. In 2020 and 2021 the World Cup was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
The motto of the competition: “Make Air, Not War” – make air, not war. “Our belief is that no one would be able to hold a gun if everyone was playing air guitar,” organizer Anna-Kaisa Kettunen said, according to broadcaster Yle. The winner emphasized: “We want to have fun on stage and produce positive energy for the audience.” He met good friends at the tournament, he said. “I hope that we can keep the Air Guitar World Championship alive for as long as possible. Especially in these dark times,” said Blumenkrants.
In the final round, the participants played in front of a good 3,500 spectators to the song “Zitti di buoni” by the Italian ESC winner Måneskin. Behind Blumenkrants, another representative from France, Frederic “French Kiss” Reau, took second place. Germans were not in the final.
