Serious accident on the A1: Pillar drilled into the van

The fire brigade, ambulance and police were on duty on the A1 in the early hours of Sunday morning. The driver of a van, who was pulling another car on a trailer, lost control of his car on the way to Vienna, probably due to microsleep. He drove onto a sloping concrete crash barrier, which catapulted the combination back onto the freeway. The noise protection wall was torn down over a length of around 50 meters.

According to the emergency services, the four occupants of the car may have had a guardian angel: one of the pillars of the noise barrier pierced the windshield and protruded into the passenger compartment, but missed the people.

When the emergency services of the Mondsee and Guggenberg fire brigades arrived at the scene of the accident at around 5:30 a.m., they saw a scene of devastation: debris was spread across the entire A1 carriageway. The towing vehicle was lying on its roof, the trailer at an angle to the roadway.

Three people were able to free themselves from the wreckage, a fourth had to be cut out of the badly damaged car using hydraulic rescue equipment. The injured were treated by ambulance. Police say they survived the accident with minor injuries. For the duration of the operation, the motorway had to be partially closed, the traffic jam stretched back to the Mondsee slip road.
