The “Aviation Oscars” were presented at the Living Legends of Aviation Europe Awards in the Scalaria in St. Wolfgang on Saturday. Hollywood star Morgan Freeman, himself a keen pilot, came to the Salzkammergut with his partner Linda Keena to personally honor the award winners from the aerospace industry.
This year’s awards went to Oliver Daemon, the youngest astronaut in history, and Daniel Wiegand from Lilium Air Mobility, for his innovative 36-motor, electrically powered aircraft. Robert Dewar, designer of the Airbus A220, Sir Stephen Hillier, former General Air Chief Marshal Royal Air Force and current Chairman of the CAA, Shane Lundgreen of Metolius Aviation Capital and Hamish Harding of Action Group have also been inducted into the Hall of Fame call themselves the Living Legends of Aviation in the future.
Sarah Rutherford, by far the youngest winner, received a standing ovation. After the 19-year-old circumnavigated the world solo in her single-engine Shark Aero UL aircraft between August 18, 2021 and January 20, 2022, she was presented with the ‘Aviation Inspiration Award’. With this adventure, the Belgian-British pilot secured two entries in the Guinness Book of Records.
After his arrival in Salzburg, Morgan Freeman himself enjoyed a scenic flight in the Flying Bulls’ DC-6 before he was flown on to Lake Wolfgang by seaplane.
