Robin Dutt’s team won 3-1 (1-1) at WSG Tirol and was able to redeem themselves for Thursday’s 0-4 defeat against Molde.
Zan Rogelj gave Wattens the lead after just five minutes, but WAC was able to turn the game around thanks to goals from Ante Jasic (15′), Augustine Boakye (60′) and Thierno Ballo (89′). The WAC moved up to ninth place in the table, the WSG ranks sixth after the defeat.
Compared to the away win in Ried last weekend, the two Slovenians Rogelj and Nik Prelec slipped into the starting XI for the hosts. In contrast to the bitter European Cup exit on Thursday, the Carinthians brought the newcomers Matteo Anzolin, Ervin Omic and Nikolaos Vergos onto the field from the start.
The game got off to a flying start for WSG. After a corner kick from Wolfsberg, the Tyroleans countered and after a serious mistake by Anzolin in midfield, Rogelj ran up and away on his own. He confidently converted past Hendrik Bornmann for an early lead (5th). But the game then took place mainly in the half of the WSG, Wolfsberg had the game under control after falling behind. Tai Baribo had the first Carinthian chance to score from an acute angle (13′).
The deserved equalizer came two minutes later. After winning the ball in midfield and a good lateral movement by Vergos, Jasic kept the overview and scored to make it 1-1 (15th). Jasic then had the opportunity to take the lead with a header, but missed. A long-range shot by Michael Novak and a shot by Vergos, both of which Ferdinand Oswald was able to score in the WSG goal, led to an increase in chances for Wolfsberg in the first half. The hosts, on the other hand, did not pose a serious threat before half-time despite their offensive efforts and were unable to pose any major problems for the well-formed WAC defense.
A similar picture emerged after the change of sides. The WAC had more shares in the game, but Robin Dutt’s team couldn’t create any chances for the time being. So it needed the substitutes Dario Vizinger and Boakye. After a quick switching game via Vizinger and the strong Jasic, the ball landed at Boakye, who put Wolfsberg ahead with his first goal of the season (60′). The Tyroleans now reacted with increased offensive efforts, Lukas Sulzbacher had two good chances to score with two long-range shots (64th and 70th).
On the WAC side, Vizinger hit the crossbar after a great pass from Jasic and missed the chance to make the decision (82nd). A minute later, Ballo, who came on as a substitute, missed the match point, but still used it in the 89th minute after a pass from Boakye. The WSG couldn’t keep up and suffered their first defeat in their fifth home game against WAC.
