Despite numerical superiority, 1. FC Köln did not achieve their second win of the season in the German Bundesliga. The Rhinelanders had to settle for a 0-0 draw against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. Meanwhile, Oliver Glasner’s Frankfurters celebrated a 4:3 (3:2) win at newly promoted Werder Bremen and, thanks to their first win of the season, moved up to eleventh place in the table with five points. For Bremen it was again the first championship defeat in 2022/23.
Mario Götze gave Frankfurt the lead in the second minute with his first league goal since his return in the summer. Anthony Jung (14′) and Leonardo Bittencourt (17′) shot Werder in front, but Randal Kolo Muani (32′), Jesper Lindström (39′) and Djibril Sow (48′) turned the game in favor of the Hessians. Niclas Füllkrug’s converted penalty kick in the second minute of added time came too late for Werder this time. Captain Marco Friedl played through, Romano Schmid came on in the 30th minute.
Cologne played against VfB for half an hour with one man more after Stuttgart’s Luca Pfeiffer (56th) saw the red card. Pfeiffer had been called up as a substitute for ÖFB team striker Sasa Kalajdzic, who is about to leave Wolverhampton.
“We came to the conclusion that it makes no sense to take him with us. Because he doesn’t feel free enough in his head to perform on the pitch today,” said Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo at DAZN about the absence of his goalscorer.
Cologne, for whom Florian Kainz and Dejan Ljubicic came on in the 59th minute, remained unbeaten after five games. The Stuttgarters are still waiting for the first success.
