The Altmünster Sailing Club is celebrating its fifties

The start of the Altmünster Sailing Club (SCA) was not easy. “Some of the population believed that a posh club for the rich was being created here,” remembers former chairman Hermann Lobmayr. “There was also hostility from politicians.” Then there was the difficult search for a location. In 1973 the club members only had six buoys in front of the fishing bay. A jetty was actually supposed to be built there, but the nature conservation authorities opposed it. In 1974 the attempt to settle down at the Warchalowski Curve also failed – this time due to resistance from the population.

Finally, in the same year, the sailors took over an existing jetty on the Esplanade. It was the beginning of today’s SCA port facility, which was expanded step by step in the years that followed. To top it off, the clubhouse on the shore was built between 1986 and 1988.

Today, 50 years after its founding, the SCA is an integral part of Altmünster club life – and at the same time a pillar of sailing on Lake Traunsee. The sailing club gained an international reputation as the organizer of European Championships (A-Cat 1997, Yngling 2019) and European Cup competitions (Trias 2004, 2010, 2016). At the same time, the Altmünster sailors are extremely committed to working with young people. At the SCA Youth Sailing Weeks every summer, young skippers are familiarized with windward, leeward, tiller and bowline in the club’s own optimists.

What was started by a small group of men in 1972 is now a big deal: the SCA now has almost 300 members, including 80 young sailors. The port facility has 113 berths. “One can hardly imagine Altmünster without the presence and commitment of the association,” says Mayor Martin Pelzer (ÖVP).

On Saturday the 50th anniversary of the SCA was celebrated in the clubhouse.
