Ukraine launched counteroffensive to recapture southern cities

“Today there were powerful artillery attacks against enemy positions (…) in the entire territory of the occupied region of Kherson. It is the announcement of what we have been waiting for since spring: the beginning of the end of the occupation” of this area in the south of Ukraine, announced on television Serguii Khlan, a local deputy and adviser to the regional governor.

Khal assured that the Ukrainian forces have an “advantage” on the southern front, after several attacks in recent weeks on bridges in the region aimed at hampering the logistics of Russian troops, according to the AFP news agency.

Moscow acknowledged that there was a new offensivebut said that it had failed and that the Ukrainians had suffered heavy casualties.

Nevertheless, a barrage of Ukrainian rockets left the city of Nova Kajovka without water or electricityoccupied by Russia, officials from the Russian designated local authority told the RIA news agency.

The new Ukrainian attack comes after several weeks of relative stagnation in a war that has left thousands dead, displaced millions, destroyed cities and sparked a global food and energy crisis amid unprecedented economic sanctions.

Russian shelling of Mykolaiv left at least two dead, 24 wounded and flattened homes, according to city officials and witnesses.

Counteroffensive to recapture Kherson

The city of Kherson, occupied by Russia since March 2, is located in the south of Ukraine, has access to the Black Sea and before the war about 280,000 people lived there.

The spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Ukrainian Army, Natalia Gumenuk, She stated, quoted by Ukrainian media, that the kyiv forces attack in “several directions” on this front.

The operational tactical military group “Kakhovka”, of the Ukrainian Army, for its part, assured on its official Facebook page that it observed the withdrawal of pro-Russian separatist fighters of their positions in this region, a claim that was not independently verified.

This region is essential for Ukrainian agriculture, but it is also a strategic position, as it borders the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.

Shortly after the occupation Russia began preparations to organize a referendum in the region, in addition to creating military administrations.

In April, the Ukrainian Army denounced the appearance of more than 800 new graves in this cityaccording to conclusions drawn from a satellite photo obtained by a British NGO.

“At least 824 new graves appeared in the cemetery of the city of Kherson from February 28 to April 15,” said the Ukrainian force on its Telegram channel, which accompanied the message with an image of the Planet Lab company analyzed by the Center for Information Resilience (CIR), based in London.
