Enough believes that the “opportunity for change” was missed

This Monday, Chega expressed regret that the Angolans missed “an important opportunity for change” in the face of the “absolute and undemocratic power” of the MPLA in the general elections in Angola.

“This was an important opportunity for change in Angola after decades of absolute and undemocratic exercise of the MPLA’s power, with devastating results in terms of population poverty, institutional corruption and a slowdown in human development indicators in this country,” says Chega National Directorate.

In a statement released this Monday, the André Ventura-led party laments that “for now, this opportunity seems to have been missed.”

According to the final results published this Monday by the National Electoral Commission (NCV) of Angola, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won with 51% of the vote in the general elections held about a week ago, while the National Union for the Liberation of Angola Complete independence of Angola (UNITA) received 44%.

Chega also indicates that “she clearly respects the results of the elections”, but believes that there are “legitimate and persistent doubts, due to information that has been made public and reached us through several interlocutors, regarding the reliability of the relevant electoral process, despite the presence of several international observers.”

In a statement, the far-right party also deplores the presence of Portuguese head of state Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the funeral of former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos “because of the symbolism and political message that goes through, legitimizing and devaluing the crimes against the Angolan people and against the Portuguese.”

According to the final results presented at CNE headquarters by the body’s president, Manuel Pereira da Silva, 44.82% of the 14.4 million voters voted in last Wednesday’s election, with 1.67% of white votes and 1.15% of invalid votes.

The MPLA received 3,209,429 votes or 51.17%, electing 124 deputies, while UNITA received 2,756,786 votes, guaranteeing 90 deputies, 43.95% of the total.

The CNE Plenum proclaimed João Lourenço, head of the MPLA list, as President of the Republic of Angola, and Esperanza da Costa, number two, as Vice President.
