Civilian police are investigating a complaint of physical and psychological torture by two young workers who were assaulted by their superiors in Salvador, the Brazilian state of Bahia. Video of the attack has surfaced on social media.
The complaint was filed on 26 August, but the crime took place on 19 August. This is an alleged theft of 30 reais, about 6 euros, which the workers deny. One of the victims had a burn on his hands at number 171, in connection with the crime embezzlement (harm another person).
To the Brazilian news portal G1, 21-year-old William de Jesus, one of the young men who were tortured, said that on the day of the assault, he came to work, but was “ambushed” by two bosses. During the torture, the men wanted him to confess to the alleged theft. “The moment I was beaten, they were recording and telling me to confess. I said, “I’m not going to confess to anything because I didn’t steal anything.”
Marcos Eduardo, who was also beaten with batons in his hands, said he was injured and received death threats.
“I do not need it [roubar]. I have a son, I pay rent, I work. I woke up at 5 am every day to work for him. Left at almost 8pm. If I was going to steal, I wouldn’t steal 30 reais,” he said. G1.
