The attacks took place in three places, the Ministry of Defense said in Moscow. The Ukrainian side suffered heavy losses, it said. The information could not be independently verified. Since June, the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly announced a major counter-offensive in the south.
On Monday, the southern group of the Ukrainian army announced that its own troops had broken through a Russian front line in the Cherson region. Accordingly, units of the Donetsk separatists and Russian marines were forced to withdraw. No exact locations were given.
The Ukrainian general staff made no mention of any offensive in the region in its report for Monday evening. However, Ukrainian authorities asked the population to leave the Russian-occupied areas if possible. Those who cannot do this should stock up on food and water and go to safe buildings.
Western military observers suspected a Ukrainian advance on Nowa Kakhovka. An important road to supply the Russian troops on the right bank runs across the Dnipro dam there. The Ukrainian army has been shelling the road from afar for the past few days.
Meanwhile, Moscow also accused Ukraine of firing rockets at the occupied city. The RIA news agency quoted the local authorities deployed by Russia as saying that water and electricity had failed in Nowa Kakhovka. The place is east of Cherson, the target of a Ukrainian counter-offensive.
Selenskyj promises reconquest
According to the authorities, two people were killed in the center of the Ukrainian-controlled city of Mykolaiv as a result of Russian shelling. In addition, 24 people were injured, it said.
In his daily video speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised his compatriots a recapture of all Russian-occupied territories. In his speech on Monday evening, however, he only hinted at the new Ukrainian counter-offensive in the south of the country. No one who behaves responsibly will say anything about their plans during the war, the president said.
“But the occupiers should know: We’re driving them across the border. Our border, where nothing has changed,” Zelenskyy said in Kyiv. “If the Russian soldiers want to survive, now is the time to go home.” Those who are afraid of returning to Russia should surrender. “We guarantee them compliance with all the norms of the Geneva Conventions.”
