The new school year starts on September 5th in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, and on September 12th in the other federal states. The timetable must already be in place on the following day (although changes may occur later), the class representatives must be elected by October 7th (Vienna/Lower Austria/B) or October 14th.
The first holidays are then at the end of October: For the third time, the Austria-wide autumn holidays between the national holiday (October 26) and All Souls Day (November 2) are on the agenda. Since October 26th falls on a Wednesday this year, schools could independently give themselves time off on Mondays and Tuesdays and thus extend the time-out even further. Since November 2nd is also a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week are alternatives for school-autonomous days and an extension of vacation.
A total of four such school-autonomous days will be available to schools in 2022/23. There is another possible use right at the beginning of December: The Immaculate Conception (December 8) falls on a Thursday this year, which means that Friday is a day that is autonomous for the school.
December 24th is a Saturday this year and marks the beginning of the Christmas holidays, which last until January 8th. Applications for school grants must be submitted by December 31st.
The 2023 semester break is on the program in Vienna and Lower Austria from February 4th to 12th. In Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg they fall on February 11th to 19th, in Upper Austria and Styria on February 18th to 26th.
The students all have Easter holidays from April 1st to 10th. The national holiday on May 1 falls on a Monday in the coming school year. The next day (May 2nd) the Central Matura 2023 begins with the exams in Latin and Greek, which lasts until May 11th (Italian). Ascension Day on May 18th is another Thursday public holiday, and the following Zwickeltag is once again a good choice for a school-autonomous day.
The Whitsun holidays from May 27th to 29th no longer really have a holiday character: apart from the Whitsun weekend, they only consist of Whit Monday – Tuesday has been taught normally since the introduction of the autumn holidays (unless it is released autonomously by the school). The last public holiday before the end of school is Corpus Christi on June 8th – here, too, the following Friday is a candidate for a school-autonomous day as a gusset day.
The school year ends on June 30th in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and on July 7th in the other federal states. School starts again on September 4th or 11th, 2023.
