João Lourenço, who was running for a second term, reacted in this way to the announcement of the final results of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), which brought victory to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) with 51.17% of the vote. against 43.95% of the National Union for the Complete Independence of Angola (UNITA).

When asked by journalists about the loss of votes, since the MPLA won with 61% in 2017, Joao Lourenço denied that these were the worst results ever, as the party emerged victorious.

“We did not have the worst results, because we won, if we have the worst results, which will lose the opposition, which lost five elections. champagne,” said the MPLA leader, continuing the toast.

João Lourenço emphasized that the MPLA had won “unconditionally”, devaluing the loss of Luanda to a rivalry with UNITA, since it was a question of general elections and not provincial or regional ones “and even more so autarctic”.

He also thanked the party activists, the national and international observers who followed the vote, and the CNE “who allowed the Angolans to choose their future through democratic means”.
