102 years old: Steyr’s former mayor, Franz Weiss, is as vital as ever

“Franz Weiss shaped an era in Steyr. During his time, he made our city more social and modern,” says Mayor Markus Vogl, who paid a visit to the former mayor today along with other well-wishers. Among other things, according to Vogl, the safeguarding of the water supply through the founding of the cleanliness association, the construction of the Enns and Steyr bridges and in the social area the “meals on wheels” and mobile home nursing can be traced back to his initiatives. One of Franz Weiss’ greatest successes is his personal commitment to the construction of the BMW plant in Steyr.

SP district chief Katrin Auer emphasizes that “Franz Weiss also has a list of successes as a cultural advisor.” “The city’s 1000-year celebration, combined with the state exhibition about Hallstatt culture at the time, is remembered as a great success,” says Auer.

Franz Weiss was born on August 30, 1920 in Garsten. The trained fitter and later foreman in the Steyr works dedicated himself to employee representation with his social democratic attitude. He became chairman of the works council for employees in what was then the Steyr works. From 1965 he was a SP municipal councilor in Steyr. In 1968 he became acting vice mayor. On October 3, 1974, the Steyr municipal council elected Franz Weiss mayor. For nine years, until 1983, he was city manager. On January 20, 1984 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Steyr.
