When the three tourism associations Traunsee, Almtal and Laakirchen merged in 2019, those responsible quickly agreed that a connecting element is the old industrial culture in the region. From the former scythe factory in Scharnstein to the former shoe factory Kitzmantel in Vorchdorf to the paddle steamer Gisela on Lake Traunsee: the Traunsee-Almtal region is characterized by industry.
Not just beautiful scenery
And that should also be increasingly used for tourism in the future. “Industry has shaped the culture of the people here,” says Tourism Director Andreas Murray. “Our guests don’t just come to the region because of the beautiful landscape, they are also looking for authenticity and the appeal of technology. We have a lot to offer here, from the traditional Schloss Eggenberg brewery to the ceramics manufactory in Gmunden.
A symposium on the subject of “industrial culture” is planned for 2023, which will deal with the development of tourism potential and corresponding networking. The region will also contribute with its old factories in the Capital of Culture year 2024.
A trial balloon was launched last year with a Long Night of Industrial Culture. Ten companies and industrial museums presented themselves to the population and attracted around 1,500 visitors. “The response exceeded all expectations,” says Wolfgang Chmelir from Miba AG, which also opened its doors at the time.
Tomorrow evening the Long Night of Industrial Culture will take place for the second time, this time with more than twice as many companies. “Last year, some companies were still skeptical,” says Murray. “This year they are enthusiastic and have individual programs.” Between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. there are guided tours, presentations and product demonstrations for the whole family, and the employees on site are available to answer questions.
