A 34-year-old woman at 30 weeks pregnant passed away last Saturday after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest while she was being transferred from the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon due to a lack of vacancies in the neonatology service. The child survived by an emergency caesarean section.
A hospital statement said a woman of Indian descent was admitted to Santa Maria North Hospital around 2 a.m. Aug. 23 without “pregnancy monitoring data” and with difficulty breathing. and high blood pressure.
Once stabilized, the pregnant woman was transferred “around 1:00 p.m. that same day to the San Francisco Xavier Hospital due to a lack of vacancies for a neonatologist at CHULN, accompanied by a doctor and nurses.”
During transport, the woman suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest, during transport, cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed. According to TVIthe cardiac arrest lasted 17 minutes and the woman fell into a deep coma.
Upon arrival at the San Francisco Xavier Hospital, the woman underwent an emergency caesarean section. A newborn weighing 772 g survived and was later admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit due to prematurity. The mother in intensive care will die.
