A 19-year-old from the Ried district had to answer for the crime of grievous bodily harm in the jury courtroom in the Ried regional court.
On March 24, 2022, two groups of young men met in the parking lot of the Ried leisure pool. There may have been a dispute about a young woman. “We wanted to have a discussion there, but then there was a push,” the accused told Judge Stefan Kiesl. He actually wanted to settle the dispute, said the 19-year-old. “But then I ask myself where the serious injury comes from. Do you think that you get a double fracture of the jaw from a push?” asked the judge. The accused’s response: “Well, that could be the case. I don’t know how the double fracture of the jaw happened either.”
Some witnesses are questioned, including the victim, who can no longer remember anything because he is unconscious. The defendant wrote him a Snapchat message the next day apologizing. “But I didn’t answer,” said the victim. He did not take a screenshot of the message. Finally, the main witness for the prosecution had his say. He recreated the situation in the courtroom with another person. “I saw 100 percent that he hit the man in the side of the face with his fist coming from behind.”
The defendant stuck to his version. There was only a shove, but he did not strike. “I’m giving you one more chance for a possible confession,” Judge Kiesl said of the accusation. He then consulted his defender Christian Breit for several minutes.
“My client sticks to his answer, he didn’t strike,” said Breit. The trial was eventually adjourned. The court will obtain a surgical expert opinion and another witness is to be questioned.
