Kindergartens on average closed 25 days a year

According to the current day-care center statistics from Statistics Austria, the facilities in Tyrol have the most days closed (38), while those in Vienna have by far the fewest (10). The situation is similar with the crèches: on average, they were closed for around 18 days across Austria – here, too, Vienna has the fewest closed days (10), while Upper Austria had the most (27).

In the kindergarten sector, apart from Vienna, only Styria and Burgenland (24 each) were slightly below the Austrian average and Lower Austria exactly on average (25). In addition to Tyrol, Carinthia (32) also has more than 30 average closing days. If you look at the statistics according to the exact number of days closed, the results are also remarkable: Across Austria, more than 400 of the 4,600 kindergartens were closed for 51 operating days or more, half of which were in Tyrol (200). Only slightly more than 900 had ten closing days or fewer.

The vast majority of kindergartens open their doors between 7 a.m. and 7.29 a.m. (around 3,100 out of 4,600). Between 6 a.m. and 6.29 a.m. almost only kindergartens in Vienna open. The federal capital also stands out at the other end of the opening hours: 600 of its approximately 700 kindergartens only close at 5 p.m. or later. In all other federal states together it is only around 900 out of 3,900.

Vienna kindergartens open the longest

Conversely, a fifth of the kindergartens in Austria send the little ones home before 2 p.m. – this is most often the case in Styria. There, play corners and playgrounds in 300 of the 700 kindergartens are deserted by two o’clock in the afternoon.

The statistics on the number of hours that are open look similar: a total of 371 of the 4,600 kindergartens are open for twelve hours or longer, 330 of them in Vienna alone. 149 open for eleven to twelve hours, 1,024 for ten to eleven hours and 1,002 for nine to ten hours. 930 facilities are open for less than seven hours, with a particularly large number in Styria (300).
