However, the questioning of the 37-year-old, who had been knocked down by a stranger with a bottle, did not reveal any new evidence of the perpetrator, LKA director Katja Tersch told APA. The investigators therefore continue to rely on trace evaluations of the crime scene, which are still ongoing.
Tersch could not provide any information about the details of the interrogation, because this could endanger the investigation, she said. The police had recently asked for information from the population.
An autopsy confirmed on Monday that the child had drowned. There was no evidence of any violence that could have been inflicted on the boy.
Dad knocked unconscious from behind
The 37-year-old was walking with his boy, who was in a pram, at 4:00 a.m. on a promenade next to the Ache when the crime apparently took place. In this case, this is “quite normal behavior” and nothing unusual, Tersch said. The man stated that he often did this to calm his mentally handicapped child.
After the German father had been knocked unconscious, the six-year-old apparently got out of the stroller on his own and fell into the river. There was only an embankment between the river and the promenade. The child was aborted and finally found dead around 600 meters downstream.
The perpetrator had previously approached the boy’s father from behind in the area of the main school jetty and then hit him in the back of the head in a targeted and powerful manner with a bottle. The 37-year-old fell to the ground and remained unconscious. The perpetrator is said to have taken the man’s wallet and mobile phone. He fled in an unknown direction. The cell phone and wallet were eventually found in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene.
At around 5:20 a.m., the father was found unconscious by a passer-by. This informed the rescue. In the course of providing assistance, the father then asked about his child. A search operation was then initiated and the six-year-old was finally recovered an hour later.
