New York will ban carrying weapons in public spaces

Even when the weapons are hidden in cases, bags or pockets, they will be prohibited in “bars, libraries, schools, public services and hospitals” in the region, said Hochul, governor of the fourth largest state in the United States, with 20 million inhabitants. .

Along the same lines, he stated that he refuses to give up his “right as governor to protect New Yorkers from gun violence or any other form of harm” adding that he will continue to “lead the way and implement common sense gun safety legislation.”

The new legislation that prohibits the use of weapons was voted by Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, both from the Democratic Party.

Reaction against the Court

The move is part of a reaction to a ruling in late June by the conservative-majority US Supreme Court that upheld the right of Americans to leave their homes armed and struck down a 1913 New York law that restricted the carrying of firearms.

For its part, Adams, celebrated that “New York City will defend itself against this decision, and new eligibility requirements for concealed carry permit applicants and restrictions on carrying concealed weapons in ‘sensitive locations,’ such as Times Square,” reported the AFP news agency.

The mayor, a former police officer who made the fight against firearm violence the central point of his administration, presented a sign that says “Times Square: Gun Free Zone”, which will be hung tomorrow in this busy and iconic area of the heart of Manhattan, where gigantic advertising screens light up day and night to attract the attention of the 50 million visitors who pass through each year.
