UNITA leader promises not to abandon those who voted for the party

The leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) promised tonight that he would not abandon those who voted for the party and confirmed that he would not recognize the official results of the August 24 elections.

“UNITA and its president have not abandoned those who entrusted their vote to the alternation,” Adalberto Costa Junior said in a statement released shortly before midnight local time (the same time in Lisbon).

On Monday, the National Electoral Commission of Angola (CNE) announced the final results, with the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) winning with an absolute majority, a result contested by UNITA.

In a statement to the country, Adalberto Costa Júnior said UNITA was silent on the process as processes were currently underway “in relation to electoral disputes, the deadlines of which are currently being met and provided for by law”, referring to complaints to the CNE.

UNITA is demanding that the CNE compare the polling station protocols in its possession with those held by the parties, disputing the fact that the authorities did not even provide polling station data, which allowed for the final count.

The largest opposition party conducted a parallel count of the summary protocols collected by its delegates, “a delicate and complex process that is now in its final stages.”

“We will do everything to ensure that all votes are effectively counted and respected,” said Adalberto Costa Junior, adding: “We are together, the Angolan people, united by one common cause, the scrupulous observance of electoral truth for Angola for all.” “.

“In recent days, we have held talks with the ambassadors of the UN Security Council member states, with other countries that have relevant relations with Angola, and with the leaders of authoritative civil society institutions and other respected figures,” explained Adalberto Costa Junior, justifying the party silence.

Today “we have much more data than a week ago and that on August 24 people voted for change, so UNITA and its partners in the United Patriotic Front do not recognize the final results published this week by the National Electoral Commission because they do not reflect the electoral truth ”, he added.

But now the UNITA leader hopes that “the National Electoral Commission, as well as the Constitutional Court, really perform their functions in strict observance of the Constitution and laws, and that the National Electoral Commission does not shy away from refuting the protocols in their keeping copies of the protocols held by political parties.”

“I confirm that the MPLA did not win the August 24 elections,” he said, stressing that Angola needs to “create a truly democratic and rule of law state with a free and pluralistic press, different from the practice of censorship, propaganda and and the absence of the controversial that every day continue to attack all Angolans.”
