Hundreds of German airline Lufthansa flights were canceled this Friday due to a strike by pilots demanding better working conditions and higher wages.
About 800 flights were suspended in Frankfurt and Munich due to the shutdown, according to the company, affecting more than 100,000 passengers.
Lufthansa said it offered a one-time surcharge of €900, equivalent to a 5% surcharge for senior pilots and 18% for novice pilots.
The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit, which called for a strike, called for a 5.5% increase this year and an automatic rise above the inflation rate in 2023.
This year, Germany recorded its highest inflation in decades, with energy prices skyrocketing.
