Supermarkets and grocery stores, as well as other businesses in New Jersey, USA, are prohibited from issuing or selling disposable plastic or paper bags.
According to the newspaper New York Times, an alternative found by traders is the use of reusable plastic bags, which require more production resources and take longer to degrade in the environment. This solution would have been more environmentally friendly from the start, assuming the bags would be used multiple times.
However, in this US state, there are reports of residents who have begun hoarding dozens of reusable plastic bags and don’t know what to do with them.
Sheli Miller, a professor at the University of Michigan, told The New York Times that it takes at least 10 uses of this type of bag to make up for the material costs of production.
The law also applies to restaurants, as they are prohibited from using polystyrene and can only provide straws upon customers’ request.
The delivery retailers have been reluctant to disclose the number of reusable bags they have sold since the law went into effect last March, but Walmart and Target assured The New York Times they were given a choice. so that the customer refuses reusable bags when receiving orders in the store.
Bob Smith, a New Jersey senator, acknowledged the possibility of making an exception for delivery companies, allowing them to deliver paper bags themselves.
