Young man caught in high voltage power line

How the accident happened is still under investigation. What is certain is that the young German climbed onto a parked locomotive at Schärding station around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. What he wanted up there is unclear. The 19-year-old should have gotten into the high-voltage line, the police said on Saturday evening.

A resident who heard a loud bang and then saw a cone of light informed the emergency services. The police officers saw the seriously injured man on the railcar and arranged for the ÖBB emergency coordinator to switch off the power in the danger area.

Firefighters rescued the young man. He was treated by the emergency doctor and then flown to Vienna General Hospital in a rescue helicopter. There he is treated by specialists in the center for severe burn injuries. Details about his condition were not known on Saturday evening.
