Electricity price brake should bring 500 euros per household

According to information from the federal government, every household will pay a lower electricity price – 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) – for that share of electricity consumption that corresponds to 80 percent of the average consumption of an Austrian household in the previous year. The limit should be 2,900 kWh. For everything beyond that, the current market price must be paid.

The measure should bring annual savings of around 500 euros per household – and an incentive to save electricity. The government will provide a total of 2.5 billion euros.

  • Vienna today: Government agree on “electricity price brake”.

No social graduation

For the time being, there will be no social graduations or differences depending on the size of the household or individual electricity consumption. In a second step, possibilities are being examined to provide more support for multi-person households. There is also room for more relief for people who are exempt from broadcasting fees. There should also be support for companies – especially small and medium-sized companies, including craft businesses.

“The electricity price brake is coming,” confirmed Chancellor Karl Nehammer (VP). “We want to adopt them in the Council of Ministers on Wednesday so that we can implement them quickly.” They are still working on the last details, “but nothing stands in the way of a decision in the Council of Ministers,” said Leonore Gewessler (Greens) from the Ministry of Energy.
