Pinochet revived, Gustavo Petro’s response to the Chilean plebiscite

The rejection of the new Constitution of Chile prevailed with almost 62% of the votes, against just over 38% in favor of approval, according to 95.87% of the official scrutiny.

A failed reform

The plebiscite held today took place within the framework of a process that began in 2019 with the social outbreak in Chili, in a wave of protests demanding greater social justice in a very unequal country, which included the request to reform the Constitution in force since 1980.

In October 2020, 80% of Chileans voted in favor of carrying out this reform and then elected the members of a Constituent Convention, which prepared the text that was submitted this Sunday to the vote of the population.

The project enshrined an indigenous “plurinationality” and established a new catalog of social rights in health, abortion, education and pensions, with a marked emphasis on the environment and the protection of new rights, although it maintained the market economy.

The October 2020 plebiscite to decide to enter a constitutional process, after the great social revolt of 2019 in demand for greater social justice, had the support of almost 80% of the electorate.

“Apruebo” won almost exclusively among a majority of Chileans abroad, where there were some 100,000 registered voters.

The new text, of 388 articles and elaborated during a year by a Constitutional Convention, enshrined a “Social State of Rights”, in response to claims expressed in the massive demonstrations of October 2019.

The elements that caused the most divisions in the project were having enshrined indigenous plurinationality and having included abortion, the right to “decent” housing in a text with a marked environmental emphasis that nevertheless maintained the model of market economy.
